Despite it’s beauty from above, San Francisco Bay is badly polluted. During the gold rush, rivers and streams filled the bay with mercury used by miners to extract gold flecks from the sediment. Urban sprawl and landfill have destroyed wildlife and habitat along the Bay's once rich shorelines. San Jose and vicinity, at the southern tip of the Bay, continue to grow and spread outward.
